DESIGNER • GRAPHIC ARTIST • ILLUSTRATOR

Austin American-Statesman, Texas
• Designer,  graphics artist / editor / director

As designer of newspaper pages, primarily in business sections, I assembled articles, images and information elements for clean dynamic pages. I coordinated with editors, reporters, photographers, graphic artists and copy editors to ensure we met daily production deadlines. I designed pages from 1996 to 2011. Our most recent pagination program was based on InDesign. I used Photoshop to create photo illustrations.

As a graphics artist and then graphics director, I created graphics and illustrations and was art director of a four- and five-member team. As graphic artist I used both traditional methods (wet and dry media) and digital methods (FreeHand, Illustrator, Ray Dream) for illustrations. For graphics we transformed from using traditional technical pen, border tape and typesetting pasteups to digital, Macintosh-created locator maps, charts, graphs, and informational graphics. I created and managed graphics from 1985 to 1996.

The Mesa Tribune, Arizona
Created maps, charts and graphs with phototypesetting, border tape, PMTs and technical pens in daily newspaper. Illustrated using variety of traditional media, including pen and ink, pastel and airbrush. Created cartoons for editorial page during first year. I work in Mesa from 1981 to 1984.
